Přestože ÚTIA nemá statut vysoké školy, významně se angažuje ve spolupráci s několika univerzitami na všech stupních studia - v bakalářském, magisterském i doktorském.

Ústav se zabývá základním a aplikovaným výzkumem v oborech informatika, umělá inteligence, stochastická informatika, zpracování signálu a obrazu, rozpoznávání obrazu, teorie řízení, teorie systémů a ekonometrie (pro bližší informace navštivte stránky vědeckých oddělení).

Ústav se podílí na vysokoškolské výuce, výchově doktorandů, na zavádění vědeckých výsledků do praxe a na popularizaci vědy a výzkumu.

Ústav teorie informace a automatizace (ÚTIA) vznikl 1. ledna 1959 spojením dvou pracovišť tehdejší Československé akademie věd – Laboratoře pro automatizaci a telemechaniku a oddělení teorie informace Ústavu radiotechniky a elektroniky.
