The Institute of Information Theory and Automation (UTIA) is a public non-university research institution which administratively falls under the Czech Academy of Sciences. UTIA conducts fundamental and applied research in computer science, signal and image processing, pattern recognition, system science, and control theory. In addition to its research activities, UTIA is engaged in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate education. It also publishes the journal Kybernetika and acts as a certified forensic expert institution. UTIA consists of eight scientific departments, computer centre, library, facility maintenance department and business administration department. UTIA is managed by the Director and the Board.

Innovation Award 2016
Association of Innovative Entrepreneurship of the Czech Republic awarded Ing. Milan Talich, Ph.D. and his team the main prize for their work „Expert system for monitoring of deformations of hazardous objects and locations“, which was created in cooperation with Geodézie Ledeč nad Sázavou s.r.o. This prestigious contest was established in 1996.

BELIEF'16
The theory of belief functions, also referred to as evidence theory or Dempster-Shafer theory, is a well established general framework for reasoning with uncertainty, with well understood connections to other frameworks such as probability, possibility and imprecise probability theories. First introduced by Arthur P. Dempster in the context of statistical inference, the theory was later developed by Glenn Shafer into a general framework for modeling epistemic uncertainty.
Václav Lín has successfully defended his PhD thesis
Václav Lín has successfully defended his PhD thesis at the Faculty of Management of the University of Economics in Prague. The defence took place in Jindrichuv Hradec on August, 30, 2016. The topic of his thesis was "On sequencing problems in the management of troubleshooting operations".
Doc. RNDr. Martin Janžura, Csc. passed away
We regret to announce that Martin Janžura passed away on August 2, 2016, aged 61. His research was centered around the statistics of Gibbs random fields. For many years, he served the Institute as a deputy director. Since 2011 he has been Editor-in-Chief of the journal Kybernetika. As an associated professor, he lectured at the Charles University and the Czech Technical University on various topics in statistics and information theory. He will be missed by his colleagues and students. In him, our institute has lost an original and notable character.
CDS&T 2015 Competition Award
Ing. Raissa Likhonina from the Department of Signal Processing (ZS) received the Dean's prize of the Faculty of Transportation Sciences in the Students category of the 13th annual nationwide competition Czech traffic infrastructure / technology / innovation of the year 2015 for her diploma thesis Numerical simulation of impact with barries.

The fourth conference on Information Geometry and its Applications will be held on June 13-17, 2016, at Liblice Castle in Czech Republic. It is organized by the Institute of Information Theory and Automation of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Werner von Siemens Award for the Best Teacher to Prof. Ing. Michael Šebek, DrSc.
Prestigious Werner von Siemens Awards were delivered to young scientists, students and teachers on February 4th, 2016 in Betlem Chapel. Among them, the Best Teacher Award was presented to prof. Michael Šebek, who is the Head of the Department of Control Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague and Research Fellow at the Department of Control Theory of the Institute of Information Theory and Automation. Institute of Energy Economics, Faculty of Finance and Accounting, University of Economics in Prague awarded work of Jozef Baruník and Barbora Malínská "Forecasting the term structure of crude oil futures with neural networks" forthcoming in the Applied Energy Journal with a "Best research paper in Energy Economics 2015" prize.
Cisco Outstanding Thesis Award 2015
Zuzana Bílková, Ph.D. student in the Dept. of Image Processing (ZOI), received the first price in the Cisco Outstanding Thesis Award 2015 competition for her thesis "Segmentation of microscopic images using level set methods" (MFF UK). The supervisor was RNDr. Václav Kučera, Ph.D., MFF UK. The expert consultant of the thesis was Jindřich Soukup, Ph.D. student in the Dept. of Image Processing (ZOI).
