Ústav teorie informace a automatizace (ÚTIA) vznikl 1. ledna 1959 spojením dvou pracovišť tehdejší Československé akademie věd – Laboratoře pro automatizaci a telemechaniku a oddělení teorie informace Ústavu radiotechniky a elektroniky.
